Romantic relationships have been an odd journey for me.
As a teenager, I survived an abusive dating relationship; my college boyfriend died in a motorcycle accident. I got married, then divorced. In the last sixteen years, I’ve only been in two dating relationships, and both times I got hurt. I hope someday I will be in a loving, healthy relationship.
It’s not something I think of or dwell on often. It was odd when the thought crossed my mind that today was one more holiday without a partner to share it with.
And just as quickly, I thought of everything I have to be grateful for:
My children – their smiles, laughter, and big hugs
My family – Getting to see or talk with my parents, sister, and her family
Amazing friends
The PIC board members and volunteers who support our mission of helping others
A warm home with food in the cupboards and fridge
My dog Jilly, who needs to be walked four times a day and gets me outside
A good breeze on a summer day
The warmth of sunshine
Sunrises and sunsets
The feel of sand and waves on my feet
Jesus Christ who gave His life so I may live
God’s never-ending presence, peace, and comfort
There is so much goodness. It reminds me of Philippians 4:4-9 (below). When we focus on goodness, we truly do feel a peace that transcends all understanding.
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:4-9
